SOUTH CAROLINA — One person was killed and another injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday evening in Jasper County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Authorities said the crash happened around 6:44 p.m. on West Furnace Road, about eight miles north of Ridgeland near the intersection with Gregory Neck Road.

Master Trooper William Bennett said a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup and a 2012 Chevrolet Suburban were both traveling north on West Furnace Road when the Suburban ran off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle then returned to the road and struck the pickup.

Following the collision, the pickup ran off the right side of the road, overturned and struck a tree. The driver of the pickup, who was the only person inside the vehicle, died at the scene.

After the crash, the Suburban also ran off the left side of the road, hit a power pole and overturned. The driver of that vehicle, who was also the sole occupant, was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center for treatment.

The identity of the person who died has not yet been released. The Jasper County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the name after family members are notified.

The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
