OHIO — One person was killed and another injured in a multi-vehicle crash early Sunday on the Ohio Turnpike, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 12:19 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near milepost 77 in Sandusky County.
Troopers said a car driven by a 20-year-old Sandusky man struck the back of a semi-truck before colliding with an SUV in the middle lane. Both the car and the semi veered off the left side of the road and hit the median wall, causing the semi to catch fire.
The driver of the semi, a 69-year-old man from Sterling Heights, Michigan, died from his injuries. The 20-year-old driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The driver of the SUV, a 47-year-old man from University Heights, was not injured.
The Ohio Turnpike was shut down in both directions for about an hour before the right lanes reopened. Multiple fire departments, Sandusky County EMS, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, and a towing service assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
