OHIO — One person was killed and another injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 71 in Medina County on Sunday, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
The crash occurred around 11:42 a.m. near milepost 206 in Westfield Township. A Chrysler 200 and a Ford F250 towing a fifth-wheel trailer were both traveling northbound when the Chrysler, reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, sideswiped the Ford. This caused the Ford to lose control and overturn.
The Ford F250 detached from the trailer, went over a bridge overpass, and landed on railroad tracks down an embankment, where it caught fire.
The Ford was driven by 41-year-old Benjamin Hodgkinson of Painesville, who suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Akron City Hospital. His passenger, 52-year-old Tracy Hodgkinson, was ejected from the vehicle and later died from her injuries at the hospital.
A third vehicle, a Honda Odyssey traveling northbound, sustained minor damage from debris but no injuries were reported.
The driver of the Chrysler was not injured.
I-71 northbound and southbound was closed for about 90 minutes due to the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
