One person dead following vehicle crash in Ohio

OHIO — A 92-year-old man from Van Wert was killed Tuesday afternoon in a collision involving a semi-truck on U.S. Route 224, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at 1:04 p.m. at the intersection of Van Wert-Decatur Road and U.S. 224 in Pleasant Township. Authorities say John J. Freund was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary findings indicate that Freund was attempting to turn left onto U.S. 224 from Van Wert-Decatur Road when he failed to yield to oncoming traffic.

His 2015 GMC Terrain was struck by a 2022 Volvo semi-truck driven by Adnan Perenda, 51, of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The crash remains under investigation.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Van Wert Police Department, Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office, Van Wert Fire Department, Van Wert County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Van Wert County EMA, CERT, and Hague Towing and Repair.
