NORTH CAROLINA — A 23-year-old New Bern man was killed Tuesday evening after crashing his motorcycle during a high-speed chase with law enforcement, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said Justin Carey Jr. was riding a silver Sportbike motorcycle at an extremely high speed around 6:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 17 as he crossed the Neuse River Bridge.
A Craven County deputy attempted to stop Carey by activating emergency lights, but he fled the scene and exited onto NC 55 East.
As Carey sped away, he collided with an SUV that was turning left into a nearby parking lot. The impact caused the motorcycle to catch fire, and Carey was ejected from the vehicle. He died at the scene.
The driver and passenger in the SUV sustained minor injuries. No charges are expected to be filed in connection with the crash.
The incident remains under investigation by the State Highway Patrol.
