MICHIGAN — A 45-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a head-on collision involving a car and a semi-truck in Lenawee County, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies said the crash happened around 3:40 p.m. on US-223, west of Rodesiler Highway. The man was driving a 2024 Tesla Model 3 westbound when, according to witnesses, the car entered the eastbound lane without attempting to pass another vehicle or avoid debris.
The Tesla continued in the wrong lane and struck an oncoming semi-truck head-on. Both vehicles caught fire after the collision, which pushed the Tesla under the semi before they came to rest in a ditch.
The Tesla driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released. The semi driver was able to escape and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The sheriff’s office said it remains unclear whether the Tesla driver was wearing a seatbelt or if drugs or alcohol played a role. No passengers were in either vehicle. The crash remains under investigation.
