One person dead following vehicle crash in Indiana

INDIANA — At least one person is dead following a crash involving three semi-trucks Monday night on I-65 southbound near mile marker 218, just north of Rensselaer.

Indiana State Police say two of the trucks caught fire, prompting a full closure of all southbound lanes.

As of early Tuesday morning, crews were still working to contain the blaze. Just before 6:40 a.m., firefighters were reported to still be battling the fire.

One of the semis was hauling peat moss, which has repeatedly reignited, making it difficult to fully extinguish the flames. After the fire is put out, authorities will begin the process of removing the vehicles from the roadway.

Southbound traffic on I-65 is currently being diverted at Exit 220 (State Road 14, Fair Oaks exit), with no estimated time for reopening. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes such as U.S. 41 or U.S. 231.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
