INDIANA — A man died following a single-car crash early Monday in the 2300 block of Butler Road, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.
The crash occurred when a vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree, igniting a fire. A Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control officer was the first to arrive and assisted in extinguishing the flames.
Fort Wayne police officers also used fire extinguishers before the Fort Wayne Fire Department arrived and freed the driver, who was trapped inside the vehicle.
The man was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity and the exact cause of death will be released by the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team and Air Support Unit are investigating the incident. Authorities say speed and wet road conditions may have been factors.
Butler Road remains closed while the investigation continues.
