INDIANA — A woman died Thursday morning after a head-on crash on West Jefferson Boulevard just west of downtown Fort Wayne.

The collision happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. on March 12, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department. Authorities said the woman was driving westbound when her white car crossed the center line for an unknown reason and struck a black car traveling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the black car became trapped in the vehicle but was rescued by emergency responders and taken to a hospital with injuries that were initially reported as minor. Police later confirmed that she died from her injuries.

Officials have not yet released the identity of the woman who died. The Allen County Coroner’s Office is expected to release her name at a later time.

The crash prompted authorities to close West Jefferson Boulevard between Main Street and Swinney Park while investigators worked at the scene. Drivers were asked to avoid the area, and traffic in both directions was slowed or stopped.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
