GEORGIA — A man died Thursday morning after his vehicle left Interstate 85 and plunged into Flat Creek, according to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the crash happened around 11:30 a.m. as the vehicle was traveling southbound. For reasons still under investigation, it veered off the roadway and became nearly fully submerged in the creek.
Officials said several motorists jumped into the water in an effort to rescue the driver.
“Risking their own lives, several individuals dove into the creek and managed to pull the driver from the submerged truck, dragging him to shore as first responders arrived and began life-saving efforts,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The driver was later pronounced dead. His name has not been released. The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation.
