GEORGIA — An 86-year-old man was killed and a 71-year-old woman critically injured in a head-on collision Tuesday evening on U.S. Highway 1 South, according to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred around 8 p.m. near Green Oak Road when a white Ford truck traveling north collided with a white van heading south. Deputies identified the drivers as Oliver Coleman, 86, of Swainsboro, and Yolanda Orozco-Delgado, 71, of Lyons.
Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles when authorities arrived. Toombs County Fire crews worked to free them while Toombs-Montgomery EMS provided medical assistance.
Orozco-Delgado was taken by ambulance to Air Evac Base 91 in Vidalia and then flown to Savannah, where she remains in critical condition. Coleman was transported to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia and later died from his injuries.
Georgia State Patrol Post 18 in Reidsville is leading the investigation. Early findings indicate Coleman’s truck crossed into the southbound lane and struck Orozco-Delgado’s van head-on. Investigators believe Coleman may have suffered a medical emergency that caused him to lose control.
Sheriff Jordan Knight asked the community to keep both families in their prayers during what he described as a difficult time.
