FLORIDA — A deadly crash in Inverness early Thursday morning brought down multiple power lines and shut down surrounding streets, according to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office.
Florida Highway Patrol investigators said the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of South Apopka Avenue and East Harvard Street.
A 28-year-old Inverness man was driving west on East Harvard Street when he failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the path of a vehicle traveling south on South Apopka Avenue, driven by a 29-year-old Inverness man.
The impact caused the 28-year-old’s vehicle to overturn and hit an electrical pole, throwing the unrestrained driver from the car. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The second driver was not hurt.
The collision downed several power lines, and the sheriff’s office urged drivers to avoid the area due to the risk of high voltage. Both lanes of South Apopka Avenue were closed as crews worked to clear debris and repair damage.
