One person dead following stabbing incident at Indiana gas station

INDIANA — One man is dead and another injured following a stabbing at a downtown Indianapolis gas station Wednesday night, police said.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers were called to the Speedway gas station at 401 Kentucky Avenue just after 10:20 p.m. on a report of a stabbing.

When officers arrived, they found two adult men suffering from stab wounds. Both were taken to area hospitals — one in stable condition and the other in critical condition. The man who was critically injured was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

IMPD homicide detectives responded and believe the incident began as a verbal confrontation between the two men. “Instead of walking away, the males chose to turn the verbal altercation into a physical fight,” police said in a statement.

Investigators said preliminary evidence suggests the stabbing may have been an act of self-defense. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will determine the exact cause and manner of death and release the victim’s name once family members have been notified.
