TENNESSEE — A theft suspect was shot and killed early Friday morning during an attempted ATM theft at a Murfreesboro gas station, according to police.
The incident occurred around 5 a.m. at the 7-Eleven-Exxon station located at 1847 East Northfield Boulevard.
Murfreesboro police said three suspects arrived at the store in a stolen truck with a guy wire attached to its hitch.
The suspects reportedly broke a window, entered the store, and attempted to remove the ATM by securing it with the wire.
An armed citizen who was inside the store confronted the suspects and shot one of them. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the citizen was taken to police headquarters to provide a statement.
Shortly after the shooting, investigators located a related scene at Chariot Pointe Apartments off East Northfield Boulevard.
A white truck with a metal cable on its hitch and a running brown SUV were found abandoned at the complex. Detectives believe the remaining suspects left the vehicles there and fled in another car.
Surveillance footage is being reviewed to determine what vehicle the suspects used to escape and whether they were armed.
The investigation is ongoing. Police have not released the identities of the suspect or the armed citizen.
