INDIANA — A 17-year-old boy died early Sunday morning after an officer-involved shooting at High Dive Park Pavilion in Elkhart, police said.

According to the Elkhart Police Department, officers responded to the park’s parking lot just before 1:50 a.m. after noticing a suspicious vehicle parked after the park had closed to the public.

Police said officers approached the vehicle to speak with the adult driver and observed several male and female passengers inside, some of whom were juveniles. A second officer arrived shortly afterward to assist.

A short time later, both officers fired their weapons, striking a 17-year-old boy. Officers provided first aid at the scene before the teen was transported to a hospital, where he later died. His name has not been released.

Police said multiple handguns were recovered from inside and around the vehicle. The officers’ firearms were also seized as part of the investigation.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. Both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, according to department policy.

Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the Elkhart County Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825.
