FLORIDA — A Delray Beach man was killed early Friday morning after a stray bullet entered his home and struck him while he was asleep, according to the Delray Beach Police Department.
Police said the shooting occurred just after midnight in the 500 block of Northwest 5th Court. Officers were dispatched to the area after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired.
When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound inside his residence. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. His name has not yet been released.
Neighbors told investigators the gunfire sounded like a “war zone,” with dozens of shots fired from the street, apparently targeting a specific home. Authorities said someone inside that targeted residence returned fire.
However, witnesses indicated the victim was inside a separate nearby home and was not involved in the exchange. Investigators believe a stray bullet entered his residence and fatally struck him as he slept.
The suspect or suspects fled the scene and remain at large. Investigators remained in the area for more than 19 hours collecting evidence in hopes of identifying those responsible.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Delray Beach Police Department as the investigation continues.
