GEORGIA — A man has been arrested after a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed inside a motel in Lilburn late Friday night, according to Gwinnett County Police Department.
Police said Shermarcus Cockran, 31, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct in connection with the shooting.
Officers were called to the Live In Lodge on Stone Mountain Highway shortly before midnight. Investigators said crime scene units responded and remained at the location overnight, along with representatives from the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office and the medical examiner.
According to police, Cockran told detectives he was cleaning his firearm after returning from a gun range when it accidentally discharged. Investigators said the bullet traveled through a wall and struck the teenager in a neighboring room, where the victim had been playing video games.
The 17-year-old victim has not yet been identified by authorities.
Police spent several hours processing the scene and collected evidence from two second-floor motel rooms. Investigators said individuals believed to be family members arrived at the motel during the overnight investigation, and one person was escorted into a room by authorities.
The case remains under investigation.
