One person dead following school bus crash in Ohio

OHIO — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash involving a school bus in Carlisle Township on Tuesday morning.

Troopers responded to Parsons Road and State Route 301 around 9:30 a.m. for reports of a collision. According to investigators, the driver of a 2006 Buick was traveling east on Parsons Road when he went through a stop sign and was struck by a Keystone Local School District bus heading south on SR 301.

The impact caused the bus to overturn. No students were on board at the time; only the driver and a school aide were inside.

The driver of the Buick, 61-year-old Allan Toothman of LaGrange, was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The bus occupants — a 47-year-old LaGrange woman and a 51-year-old Elyria woman — were wearing seatbelts and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the Highway Patrol said. Both were transported to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center.

In a statement Tuesday, Keystone Local School District Superintendent Zach Weagley said the district is “closely monitoring the condition of our staff members involved” and noted that no students were on the bus. He added that transportation routes were being adjusted as needed but that no afternoon delays were expected. “The safety and well-being of our students and staff will continue to remain our highest priority,” Weagley said.

The crash remains under investigation.
