GEORGIA — A 32-year-old man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Opelika late Tuesday night after a domestic violence incident escalated into an armed standoff.

According to the Opelika Police Department, officers responded to a call around 10:41 p.m. on July 16 in the 3000 block of Wymond Drive.

When they arrived, they encountered an irate man armed with a firearm who had barricaded himself inside a home with a woman and a 2-year-old child.

The woman was able to exit the home safely, but the child remained inside with the man. Due to the severity of the situation, crisis negotiators and the Lee County SWAT Team were called to assist.

Authorities say negotiations continued for some time, but the man’s actions ultimately led to a shooting. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The child was safely recovered.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is now leading the investigation.

Officials say all evidence and video footage have been collected and will be turned over to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office. The findings will later be presented to a Lee County Grand Jury.

Further inquiries should be directed to the SBI or the district attorney’s office.
