ILLINOIS — Illinois State Police are investigating a multi-vehicle, fatal crash that occurred Saturday morning in Springfield, prompting the closure of part of Interstate 55 for several hours.

According to Illinois State Police Troop 6, troopers responded at approximately 10:38 a.m. to reports of a multi-unit traffic crash at I-55 southbound near milepost 98, close to the I-72 interchange. The crash resulted in at least one fatality, though no additional details about the victims or the number of vehicles involved have been released.

As a result of the crash, I-55 southbound is closed at the location and is expected to remain shut down for several hours while investigators work the scene. Traffic is being rerouted off I-55 southbound at Exit 100, and motorists are urged to seek alternate routes.

State Police said the crash scene remains active and that further information will be released as it becomes available.

In addition to the interstate closure, the City of Springfield is urging residents to avoid traveling on area roads Saturday due to ongoing winter weather conditions, which may further impact driving safety. Motorists are encouraged to check current road conditions and use caution if travel is necessary.
