FLORIDA — A motorcyclist was killed Sunday evening in Deltona after a collision involving a minibike at a residential intersection, according to authorities.
The crash occurred around 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Utah Drive and Captain Drive. Investigators said the minibike was traveling southbound on Utah Drive, while a Suzuki motorcycle was heading westbound on Captain Drive.
According to the preliminary crash investigation, the minibike stopped at the intersection but failed to yield the right of way to the motorcycle. Authorities said the minibike then crossed into the motorcycle’s path, resulting in a T-bone collision.
Both riders were ejected from their vehicles. The motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, despite wearing a helmet. The 17-year-old minibike rider, who was visiting from Massachusetts, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials said the minibike involved in the crash was unregistered and did not have required lighting, making it not street-legal. Investigators also noted the teen operator does not have a driver’s license. Charges are pending as the crash investigation continues.
