FLORIDA — A motorcyclist was killed in a crash Thursday morning at the intersection of Soutel Drive and New Kings Road, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
JSO Sgt. Robert Hungerford said the motorcyclist, described as a man in his late 40s, was traveling southbound on New Kings Road when the crash occurred. At the same time, a tractor-trailer car hauler was traveling northbound on the road and attempted to make a left turn onto Soutel Drive.
Hungerford said the crash happened when the motorcyclist struck the rear of the car hauler as it was turning. Members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene and pronounced the motorcyclist dead upon arrival.
According to Hungerford, the driver of the car hauler is cooperating with the investigation and is unlikely to face charges. A witness told police it appeared the motorcyclist ran a red light just before the crash.
The crash marks the 17th traffic fatality in Duval County so far in 2026 and the fifth involving a motorcyclist.
“Just be very careful, watch for motorcyclists,” Hungerford said. “Motorcyclists, please wear your helmets and high-visibility gear. It can help people see you when you’re on the roadway.”
