NORTH CAROLINA — A driver was killed early Saturday morning after a high-speed crash on U.S. Highway 64 in Nash County, according to authorities.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation issued an alert around 4:20 a.m. reporting that U.S. 64 East was closed near mile marker 458 due to the crash.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the Nashville Police Department requested assistance after responding to a single-vehicle crash along the highway.

Troopers said a white Dodge Charger was traveling at a high rate of speed when it ran off the road toward the median, overcorrected and struck the pillars supporting the U.S. 64 Alternate overpass.

The impact caused the vehicle to split into three parts, authorities said.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

U.S. 64 East reopened several hours later Saturday morning. The crash remains under investigation by Nashville police.
