OHIO — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred late Monday morning in Noble Township.

The crash happened around 11:25 a.m. on May 26 on State Route 15 near Deerfoot Drive.

According to troopers from the Patrol’s Defiance Post, a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 driven by 58-year-old Mark Riebesehl of Defiance crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2020 GMC Terrain head-on.

The driver of the Terrain, 67-year-old Dewey Nagel of Defiance, was wearing a seatbelt but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Riebesehl, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained serious injuries and was flown by air ambulance to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center. His passenger, 22-year-old Avery Calhoun of Defiance, was wearing a seatbelt and also suffered serious injuries. Calhoun was taken to ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital by EMS.

Authorities say alcohol and drug impairment are suspected factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Defiance County Sheriff’s Office, Defiance Fire and EMS, Noble Township Fire, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Mercy Health Life Flight.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds all drivers to never drive impaired and to always wear a seatbelt.
