ILLINOIS — One person was killed and another injured Tuesday night in a fiery five-vehicle crash on the Kennedy Expressway on the city’s Northwest Side, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 10:24 p.m. in the inbound lanes of the expressway near Natoma Avenue, according to Illinois State Police.
Investigators said three of the vehicles involved left the roadway, struck a light pole and became fully engulfed in flames. Emergency crews responded to the scene, where one person was pronounced dead.
Another person was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries. Officials did not immediately release the victim’s identity or the condition of the injured person.
The crash forced authorities to close all inbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway between Harlem and Nagle avenues for several hours overnight while crews responded and investigators examined the scene. The roadway has since reopened.
Illinois State Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
