SOUTH CAROLINA — A 49-year-old father from Georgia died Thursday evening after drowning in the waters off Hilton Head Island.
According to Hilton Head Fire Rescue, emergency crews were dispatched around 7 p.m. following a 911 call reporting multiple swimmers in distress near beach marker 5 on South Sea Pines Drive.
When responders arrived, they found two people struggling in the water.
Crews from Fire Rescue and Shore Beach Services entered the water and successfully pulled both swimmers to shore.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the individuals were a father and his son. Officials said they were caught in a rip current while swimming.
Lifesaving efforts were performed on the father once he was brought to shore, but he was later pronounced dead. The son was rescued without injury.
