One person dead following drowning incident in Georgia

GEORGIA — A 22-year-old man drowned Tuesday evening at R. Shaefer Heard Park near West Point Dam, according to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the victim as Lorenzo Collins of Stockbridge, Georgia.

Troup County 911 received a call around 7 p.m. reporting that a swimmer was in distress and may have gone underwater at the park.

Emergency crews from multiple agencies, including the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Corps of Engineers, and the Troup County Fire Department Dive Team, responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, officials confirmed that Collins had not resurfaced, and recovery efforts began.

Operations were temporarily paused due to a severe storm in the area, but search efforts resumed once conditions improved. Collins’ body was recovered around 10:45 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
