GEORGIA — A 32-year-old Atlanta man has died after drowning at West Point Lake on Sunday, marking the third fatal incident at the lake this month, according to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said Deshun Mayfield went underwater near McGee Bridge Park, located off Old Roanoke Road, and did not resurface.
A 911 call was made shortly before 1 p.m., prompting a response from the Troup County Fire Department’s dive team.
Rescue crews used boat operations to search the area and recovered Mayfield’s body a short time later.
In the wake of the incident, the Troup County Sheriff’s Office is urging visitors to take precautions when swimming.
“Even the most experienced swimmers should consider wearing a life jacket or have a flotation device when swimming,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Our hearts are with the victim’s family and friends during this time.”
The incident remains under investigation.
