INDIANA — One person was killed in a crash on U.S. 24 in Huntington County on Friday, according to the Huntington County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 24 and Old Fort Wayne Road.

Authorities say an eastbound semi-trailer was in the passing lane, slowing down to turn onto Old Fort Wayne Road, when an eastbound work van failed to slow down and rear-ended the trailer.

Investigators report that the work van’s driver attempted an evasive maneuver before impact, causing the vehicle to veer off the road onto the south side of U.S. 24.

The driver of the semi-trailer was uninjured, while the driver of the work van was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Huntington County Sheriff’s Department and the Huntington County Coroner’s Office.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Huntington City Police Department, Huntington Central Dispatch, Huntington County Traffic Team, Roanoke Fire Department, Indiana State Police, and Parkview Hospital EMS.
