NORTH CAROLINA — One person was killed and another injured following a chemical explosion Tuesday in Mooresville, according to officials.
Emergency crews responded to the incident at Carolina Beverage Group LLC, located at 110 Barley Park Lane, where hazmat and fire teams worked to contain an active chemical leak caused by the blast.
Officials said the person who died was the tanker operator. A plant worker was also injured and transported by EMS to a hospital in Charlotte for treatment. The extent of the worker’s injuries has not been released.
Authorities reported the explosion involved sodium hydroxide, a chemical commonly used as a cleaning agent. A secondary leak from a stationary nitrogen tank was also identified.
Despite the ongoing response, officials said there is no current danger to the surrounding community. Crews remain on scene as they continue containment efforts, and residents are being asked to avoid the area.
The incident remains under investigation.
