One person dead following accidental shooting in North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA — A 4-year-old boy has died after an accidental shooting Monday night on North Briggs Avenue, according to the Durham Police Department.

Authorities said the preliminary investigation revealed the child gained access to an unsecured firearm inside a home and accidentally shot himself.

Rhonda Rappoccio, a witness at the scene, said she was called into the street where she found the child and his mother.

She said an ambulance arrived and transported the boy, but left the scene without its sirens on.

Police confirmed in a news release that the child was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator D. Johnson at 919-560-4415 ext. 29541. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to CrimeStoppers online at durhamcrimestoppers.org or by calling 919-683-1200.
