Authorities said the preliminary investigation revealed the child gained access to an unsecured firearm inside a home and accidentally shot himself.
Rhonda Rappoccio, a witness at the scene, said she was called into the street where she found the child and his mother.
She said an ambulance arrived and transported the boy, but left the scene without its sirens on.
