MICHIGAN — A 3-year-old girl died and a 5-year-old child was hospitalized with serious injuries following a suspected drunk driving crash Friday evening, the Benzie County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The driver, 35-year-old Shaynel Guthrie of Cadillac, is facing charges including operating while intoxicated causing death, operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, and operating while intoxicated with a person under 16 in the vehicle.
Guthrie had three minor children in the car at the time of the crash, all of whom were ejected from the vehicle. Investigators said Guthrie likely failed to stop at the intersection of Kurick Road and Cadillac Highway. Her vehicle entered the roadway and was struck by a car driven eastbound on Cadillac Highway by an 18-year-old woman from Kaleva, who was not injured.
Along with the 3- and 5-year-olds, a 4-year-old child was also transported to Munson Medical Center, treated, and released.
Neither Guthrie nor her adult passenger were injured. Guthrie’s bond has been set at $500,000.
