SOUTH CAROLINA — A South Carolina man died Saturday in a two-vehicle crash in the Maxton area, according to First Sgt. S.B. Lewis of the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said a moped was traveling west on Highway 501 without rear lights and the operator was wearing dark clothing when it was struck by a westbound car. The impact caused the moped to run off the road and come to rest in a ditch.

The moped operator, 22-year-old Matthew David Moore of South Carolina, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Moore was not wearing a N.C. Department of Transportation-approved helmet. Impairment at the time of the crash is unknown.

The car’s driver was not injured, and impairment is not suspected. The investigation remains ongoing.
