OHIO — A collision between a car and a golf cart early Saturday morning in Jackson County left one person dead and two others injured, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened around 2 a.m. on South Pennsylvania Avenue near 6th Street in Wellston.
A registered golf cart, driven by 40-year-old Brant Darrow of Wellston, was traveling south when it was struck from behind by a 2014 Hyundai driven by a juvenile. The juvenile’s name has not been released due to their age.
The impact caused the golf cart to veer off the road and hit a tree.
A passenger on the cart, 25-year-old Matthew Juniper of Wellston, was taken to Holzer Medical Center in Jackson, where he died from his injuries. Darrow was transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital in West Virginia with serious injuries. The juvenile driver was treated for minor injuries at Holzer.
Both Juniper and Darrow were off-duty officers with the Wellston Police Department at the time of the crash, troopers confirmed.
South Pennsylvania Avenue was closed for nearly six hours as investigators worked at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
