NORTH CAROLINA — A Rowland woman died Thursday evening after her vehicle crashed into a bridge on Interstate 95, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Troopers responded to the scene around 5:50 p.m. near mile marker 7 on I-95 southbound.
The driver, identified as Kayanna McCallum, age 25 or 26, was traveling at a high speed in a 2013 Ford SUV when she attempted to maneuver around slower traffic by entering the median.
Officials say McCallum overcorrected, causing her vehicle to slide across both southbound lanes before veering off the road and striking the bridge structure over I-95.
McCallum died at the scene.
Following the crash, transportation officials inspected the bridge and determined it was safe for travel.
The incident remains under investigation.
