One person dead after vehicle crashes into Ohio River

OHIO — One person was killed Tuesday night after a vehicle crashed into the Ohio River in Meigs County.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 10:40 p.m. on East Main Street in Pomeroy. Authorities said the vehicle was traveling westbound when it went off the right side of the roadway, struck a utility pole and then slid into the Ohio River.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a release. A juvenile passenger was recovered from the vehicle and transported for medical treatment. The extent of the juvenile’s injuries has not been released.

Emergency crews continued working to recover the vehicle from the river, and the crash remains under investigation.

Responding agencies included the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office, Pomeroy Police Department, Pomeroy Fire Department, Middleport Police Department, Meigs County EMS, Ravenswood Fire Department and Little Hocking Fire Department.
