
NORTH CAROLINA — A Clayton man was killed Monday morning when his car was struck by a train after he drove around lowered crossing gates, according to police.
The crash happened around 10:50 a.m. at the intersection of Central Street and Main Street, a town spokesperson said.
Police reported the driver of a Toyota Corolla turned onto Central Street and attempted to bypass the lowered gates, which had flashing lights activated.
The train hit the left side of the vehicle, sending it about 300 feet from the point of impact.
The driver, identified as Bryant Dwayne Alton, 62, of Clayton, died from his injuries. Authorities said no one on the train was hurt.
