OHIO — A sheriff’s department pursuit ended in a deadly crash early Sunday morning, leaving one person dead and several others injured, according to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies attempted to stop a vehicle around 1:16 a.m. near St. Clair Avenue and East 13th Street after observing it traveling recklessly without headlights. The driver, suspected of being under the influence, sped away eastbound on St. Clair. Deputies received supervisory approval to pursue.
Minutes later, the fleeing vehicle struck another car at St. Clair Avenue and Addison Road. The driver of that vehicle, a 37-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her passenger, an adult man, was evaluated at the hospital but was not injured.
The 24-year-old driver of the suspect vehicle was hospitalized with injuries. Two passengers in his car — an adult woman and a 16-year-old girl — also suffered serious injuries. Deputies said multiple open containers of alcohol were found inside the vehicle.
The driver has been arrested on charges including aggravated vehicular homicide, suspected OVI, and multiple traffic offenses. A deputy was also hospitalized with injuries following the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
