
VIRGINIA — A driver was killed early Sunday morning after a police pursuit ended in a crash in York County, according to Virginia State Police.
Authorities said the incident began around 4:45 a.m. when a state trooper attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving on Interstate 64 eastbound near the Fort Eustis exit. Police said the driver was traveling 99 mph in a 65 mph zone and failed to stop, prompting a pursuit.
The vehicle exited the interstate and continued into York County, traveling south on Route 17, investigators said.
As the vehicle approached the intersection of Route 17 and Ella Taylor Road around 4:51 a.m., it ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a curb and then hit a tree, according to police.
A trooper pulled the driver from the vehicle as it began to catch fire and attempted to provide aid. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released the driver’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
The crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.
