PENNSYLVANIA — A Fayette County woman has died after being hit by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon. Pennsylvania State Police say the driver told authorities he believed he had struck a deer.
Troopers responded to North Morgantown Street near West Church Street in Fairchance shortly after 1 p.m. The victim, Paula Silvis, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where she later died.
The vehicle that struck Silvis was later spotted traveling west on West Church Street. When troopers attempted to pull over the driver, identified as Stephen Lemro, he initially ignored commands. Lemro was eventually stopped on PA 857, south of Pringle Lane.
Authorities say Lemro admitted, “Oh, I hit a person, I thought it was a deer,” and provided the location of the incident.
Lemro was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including careless driving causing an unintentional death.
