PENNSYLVANIA — A pedestrian died early Saturday after being struck by a vehicle in the city’s Uptown neighborhood, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.

Officers were called to the intersection of Vine Street and Fifth Avenue around 2:30 a.m. and found a man in the road with a severe head injury. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and died a few hours later.

Witnesses told police the driver, an adult male, attempted to flee after the crash but was restrained by bystanders until officers arrived. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail, and charges are expected.

Investigators with the Collision Investigation Unit processed the scene and reviewed video evidence. Officials said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

The city’s Vision Zero Fatal Crash Response Team is expected to review the site in the coming weeks to evaluate potential crash factors.
