OHIO — A 46-year-old New York man died Friday night after being hit by a car while trying to get away from loose dogs, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers identified the victim as Jason Caponera, of Yonkers, New York. Emergency crews responded to the 11000 block of Lower Valley Pike around 9:30 p.m. for reports of a pedestrian struck.
Investigators said Caponera was walking on the shoulder when two loose dogs from a nearby home ran across the street and jumped on him. In an attempt to escape, he moved toward the road and was struck by an oncoming Chevrolet Cruze driven by a 35-year-old from New Carlisle.
Caponera was taken to Mercy Health in Enon, where he later died. One of the dogs was also hit and suffered minor injuries. The driver was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation.
