NORTH CAROLINA — A 35-year-old man died early Saturday morning after being struck by a car while crossing Interstate 42 in Johnston County, according to Wilson’s Mills police.
Authorities said the man and a woman were attempting to cross I-42, formerly U.S. Highway 70, around midnight to seek help for a flat tire. The pair climbed a concrete median barrier, and the man was hit by a westbound vehicle shortly after entering the roadway. The woman was not injured.
Police said the crash occurred amid light rain and patchy fog.
The driver of the car was not hurt and is not expected to face charges.
The State Highway Patrol assisted Wilson’s Mills police in the investigation.
