INDIANA — A woman is dead after being struck by an SUV early Thursday morning on the city’s southwest side, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Officers responded just after 3 a.m. to the area of Kentucky Avenue and Maywood Road, just south of Tibbs Avenue, where they found the woman lying in the road. She was transported to a hospital but later died from her injuries.
Investigators believe the woman was walking northbound in a poorly lit area of the street when she was struck by the SUV.
The male driver of the SUV remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Police said he showed no signs of impairment but was taken for a mandatory blood draw, as required by Indiana law in fatal crashes.
Kentucky Avenue was closed in the area as police continued their investigation.
