FLORIDA — A pedestrian was killed Friday night after being struck by a vehicle in Madeira Beach, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the crash occurred at approximately 9:01 p.m. at a marked crosswalk near the intersection of 150th Avenue and Madeira Way. Investigators reported that 72-year-old Michael Arndt was in the crosswalk at the time of the incident.
At the same time, a Jeep Wrangler driven by 51-year-old Vanessa Downs was traveling eastbound on 150th Avenue in the median lane, deputies said. The vehicle struck Arndt in the crosswalk, causing him to fall underneath the Jeep.
Arndt was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
According to the sheriff’s office, Downs exhibited signs of impairment and performed poorly on field sobriety tests at the scene. She was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter, then transported to the Pinellas County Jail for booking.
The crash remains under investigation.
