INDIANA — A Seymour man was killed late Sunday night after being struck by vehicles while walking on Interstate 65, according to the Indiana State Police.
Police said the incident happened just before midnight in the southbound lanes of I-65, north of Austin. A semi-truck driver called 911 at about 11:25 p.m., reporting that he believed he had struck a person walking along the interstate. When first responders arrived, they were initially unable to locate a victim.
A short time later, as the search continued, a southbound Ford Escape struck a pedestrian who was walking northbound in the driving lane, approximately a half-mile north of the first reported impact. The driver of the Ford Escape immediately stopped and called 911.
The pedestrian was identified as Bryce Allen Sheaffer, 35, of Seymour. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Trooper Tate Rolfing, a crash reconstructionist with Indiana State Police, responded to the scene and led the investigation. Preliminary findings indicate the semi-truck grazed Sheaffer, who then continued walking northbound against traffic before entering the driving lane, where he was struck by the second vehicle several minutes later.
Police said neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected as a factor for either driver. Authorities have not said why Sheaffer was walking on the interstate.
The crash remains under investigation.
