VIRGINIA — A 52-year-old man was shot and killed by deputies in Washington County, Virginia, after authorities say he threatened them with a knife while they were attempting to serve an emergency custody order.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Feb. 17 to a home on Driftwood Lane to serve the order.

While serving the paperwork, the man, identified as Christopher Allen Smith, fought with deputies and threatened them with a knife, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies then shot Smith. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

An autopsy has been scheduled with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police and the Washington County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
