GEORGIA — A man was killed following a standoff with law enforcement that began with an alleged assault on a city worker Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.
The Lavonia Police Department said officers were first called around 1 p.m. to a home on Roberts Street after reports that a city employee had been struck with a pipe. Investigators said the worker was operating a lawn mower at the time, which was also damaged during the incident.
Police obtained arrest warrants and returned to the home around 2 p.m. to take the suspect into custody. Authorities said the man resisted arrest after less-lethal force was used and then barricaded himself inside the residence.
Local and state law enforcement agencies responded to the scene and established a perimeter while a search warrant was obtained. The Georgia State Patrol SWAT Team was then called in and made several attempts to communicate with the suspect.
During the standoff, authorities said less-lethal force was again used before an exchange of gunfire occurred.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Alan Joseph Chandler of Lavonia, was shot during the incident. He was later pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts at the scene.
Officials said no law enforcement officers were injured, and Lavonia police confirmed that none of their officers discharged their weapons.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting.
