FLORIDA — A 44-year-old man has been charged with murder months after authorities say he sold drugs that led to a fatal overdose in Manatee County.
According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found 41-year-old Jonathan Watson dead in late October near Sunset Circle North in Ellenton. Investigators determined Watson died from a suspected overdose.
Detectives later uncovered evidence of cocaine use and reviewed text messages indicating Watson had arranged to purchase drugs from Toby Davis the day before his death.
Authorities used Watson’s phone to coordinate a controlled meeting with Davis. When Davis arrived at the residence, deputies say he discarded a bag containing approximately 4.1 grams of cocaine after noticing law enforcement. He was taken into custody and found with an additional bag of cocaine.
Officials said Davis admitted to selling cocaine to Watson the previous day and allowed investigators access to his cellphone. He was initially charged with possession with intent to sell, tampering with evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Following a review of medical examiner and toxicology reports, detectives determined there was probable cause linking Davis to Watson’s death.
Davis was arrested Friday on Longboat Key and is now charged with murder by distribution of a controlled substance.
The investigation remains ongoing.
