NORTH CAROLINA — A 27-year-old man is facing additional charges after attempting to escape while in a holding cell at the Guilford County Detention Center, authorities said.
On Aug. 14, Kurtis Asante was arrested by the Greensboro Police Department for misdemeanor second-degree trespassing and placed in a holding cell while awaiting fingerprinting and processing.
Around 9 p.m., Asante left his secured area and walked about 75 feet through the processing area into the pat search room.
There, he pressed the intercom button at a secured door, prompting detention officers to respond. Officials say his actions indicated an apparent attempt to bypass the secured area.
Asante did not leave the building or enter an unsecured part of the facility. Officers immediately escorted him back, and he was secured until being moved to a housing unit.
He has been charged with misdemeanor escape from a county or city confinement facility and later released on a $500 unsecured bond. The sheriff’s office continues to review Asante’s actions and will determine whether further prosecution is warranted.
